Futures

Futures of Portsmouth was started by local philanthropist Joe Sawtelle in 1986. He had a dream to help students who had the desire and drive to attend college, but did not have the means to make it happen. Joe and his friends created the Futures endowment and, since 1986, over 200 students from Portsmouth High School have been able to make college a reality. Futures provides mentoring all through high school and, later, with financial assistance for tuition.

Who We Are

The mission of the Futures program is to provide a pathway to higher education for aspiring students who lack the necessary resources.

In 1986, local philanthropist Joe Sawtelle was able to realize his vision of helping aspiring students, who could not raise enough funds on their own, attain a college education. Many local businesses and community members contributed, and an endowment was created for college-bound youth with economic challenges. Since then, Futures has given more than two million dollars to over 200 students from the SAU 52 school district attend college. Futures also provides college mentoring during each student's high school years.
