Our Background

New Hampshire Turtle Rescue's Mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, release, and preserve native turtle species through individualized care, public education, outreach, and scientific research in support of imperiled populations of wild New Hampshire turtles. NHTR is the only facility in New Hampshire permitted to admit and care for wild Blanding’s Turtles, Spotted Turtles, Wood Turtles, and Eastern Box Turtles.

Because of their delayed reproductive maturity and long lifespans, many local wild turtle populations are sustained by a very small number of adult individuals. In New Hampshire, four out of the seven native turtle species are listed by the state as species of special concern, threatened, or endangered with extinction.

Rehabilitating injured turtles and returning them to their homes helps to ensure their survival, their ability to reproduce, and helps to mitigate the negative impacts of habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and other forms of human interference, ultimately supporting the preservation of these important species for future generations.

New Hampshire's Turtles Need Your Help!

Late spring and early summer mark the most active season for New Hampshire’s native turtles as they are on the move in search of their preferred feeding and nesting sites.

This time of the year is also when turtles are at the highest risk of injury from car strikes, pet attacks, fishhooks, and other man-made dangers.

In just the past few months alone, we have admitted over 100 injured turtles in need of emergency medical care.

With your help, New Hampshire Turtle Rescue works to mitigate the many threats these populations face.  Our priorities for the 2026 season include:

  1. Providing expert care to each and every patient we receive to give them a second chance at life and returning rehabilitated patients back to their wild homes.
  2. Developing testing protocols to monitor known and emerging diseases in wild turtle populations.
  3. Conducting scientific research to assess the long-term outcomes for rehabilitated turtles.

Your gift, no matter the size, makes a difference, and 100% of every donation goes towards turtle-related care.

New Hampshire Turtle Rescue is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization and we receive no state or federal funding; we rely entirely on the generosity of animal lovers like you.

Our goal for NH Gives is to raise $7,500 that will be matched by our very generous sponsors Firebird Farm Antiques and Emi's Porta Potties.  That means your contribution will be doubled dollar-for-dollar to protect and preserve New Hampshire’s native turtles.

There’s no better time than now to show your support for New Hampshire’s most threatened and endangered species.

Give now and double your impact to support New Hampshire's native turtles — no contribution is too small!

Here's how you can contribute and have your donation matched:

  • Donate during NH Gives ✨
  • Donate throughout the month of June during our Turtle Nesting Season Fundraising Drive:
