Libby Bessette: Staff at the Freedom Cafe

I’ve practically grown up at the Freedom Cafe, witnessing the beginning all the way to where we are right now. While we’ve changed locations and menus, introduced new events, and started traditions, our mission has always been the same: to end exploitation in the modern world. Whether it’s through serving top notch, ethically sourced coffee from small farms around the globe, making space for music and creativity, or donating to organizations like Haven, the cafe strives to positively impact the community and give back to its people. 

Over the last few years that I’ve been volunteering and working behind the counter, I’ve seen regulars, newcomers, and people who come in every once in a while, and I’ve witnessed budding relationships and reunions of old friends. I think it’s magical that the freedom cafe has a space that is open and welcoming to anyone, and brings people together. Being around all that is the freedom cafe has changed my perspective, making me more aware, more creative, and more empathetic.
