What is the 1833 Society?

The 1833 Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit group whose mission is to support the Peterborough Town Library. Several years ago, the 1833 Society raised $5.5 million towards the renovation of the library which reopened in 2021. Today, our purpose is to raise funds for the Peterborough Town Library Endowment Fund. 

Why donate to the Peterborough Town Library Endowment Fund?

Founded in 1833, the Peterborough Town Library is the oldest tax-supported, free public library in the nation. It is a centerpiece of our community and serves as a gathering place, workspace, and refuge for people of all ages. People use our physical and digital resources to educate themselves, build connections, improve their mental and physical health, and enrich their lives.

As with the creation of the library in 1833, and building projects in the 19th and 20th centuries, the 2021 renovation was possible only because of the forward-looking vision of so many. Over the decades, generous supporters provided funds to help accomplish the needed upgrades in partnership with the Town of Peterborough.

We encourage you to be part of a long tradition of supporting the Peterborough Town Library as an historic symbol of our town’s commitment to free access to information and knowledge, a modern library offering opportunities for learning, connection and collaboration, and a valuable community resource for adults, children and young people.
