Prison Outreach Program
$50 Raised
Founded in 1995, the New Hampshire Furniture Masters and its 501(c)3 parent, the American Furniture Masters Institute, are dedicated to preserving, promoting and expanding the art and craft of fine furniture making in the US. Starting with a handful of members, we now have 30 members who are all Masters of furniture making, and who all teach, write, lecture, and educate, as well as exhibit, make and sell. We are from different backgrounds, approach the craft from odd angles, and yet find we have much common ground in our fundamental belief that making fine furniture is a craft that needs to be preserved.
Our educational initiatives span from mentoring young makers to combating recidivism by teaching inmates a valuable skill, and in turn, making everyone feel valuable. Our Prison Outreach Program boasts a 100% success rate: not a single participant has returned to prison. When our participants leave the prison walls, they leave with practical skills, self-discipline, and as proud creators. Our program has been going strong for over two decades, and has expanded to the New Hampshire state prison systems for both men and women, and into Maine.
We believe fine furniture craftsmanship is about more than functionality, but is also an artful connection that tethers the designs of the past to the makers of tomorrow. Our main event this year is titled, "The Future is Handmade," because we believe many people are tired of cookie-cutter, self-assembly, furniture and want to see their vision brought to life at the hands of an artist. We love what we do, and we hope you will too!
