At Draft Gratitude, we believe every horse deserves to age in place with comfort, dignity, and safety.
This year's NH Gives campaign will help improve three important areas of the farm: replacing the aging shelter in our quarantine paddock and creating two covered feeding stations for horses in our care.
The quarantine paddock is often the first stop for new arrivals. It provides a safe space for horses to settle in, receive veterinary care, and adjust to their new surroundings before joining the herd. Just as importantly, it serves as a critical biosecurity measure, helping protect the health and safety of the horses already in our care. A sturdy shelter provides protection from wind, rain, and snow during New Hampshire winters and much-needed shade during the heat of summer. For horses that may be arriving thin, tired, injured, or simply unsure of what comes next, having a safe, dry place to rest can make all the difference. Replacing the current shelter will ensure that future arrivals have a comfortable place to recover, decompress, and begin their transition into retirement.
The new feeding stations will do more than provide shelter from the weather. They will create safer, more comfortable feeding areas where horses can eat without competition from other herd members. This is especially important for senior horses, who may struggle to maintain weight or may be less likely to stand up to a dominant horse. By reducing crowding and allowing horses to spread out, we can better ensure that every horse receives the nutrition they need to stay healthy and comfortable.
For horses living with arthritis, vision loss, chronic illness, or simply the effects of old age, these improvements will make daily life safer and less stressful. A dry place to stand, a comfortable place to eat, protection from the elements, and the ability to access food without competition are simple things that have a meaningful impact on quality of life.
These projects aren't simply about buildings. They're about creating spaces where horses can settle in safely, maintain their health, stay comfortable through every season, and enjoy the retirement they've earned.
Your support during NH Gives will help provide the shelter, comfort, and security that senior working horses deserve.
Thank you for helping us give these hardworking horses the safe retirement they've earned.
