Protecting Open Space. Connecting Community: Across Southern New Hampshire, rapid suburban growth is transforming the landscape. Forests, fields, and open land that once defined our communities are increasingly fragmented by development. As these natural spaces disappear, so do many of the places where residents can walk safely, connect with neighbors, and experience the restorative benefits of nature.

The loss of accessible green space affects everyone, but the impact is especially significant for older adults, families without private land, and individuals with limited mobility. For many residents, simply finding a safe place to walk outdoors or enjoy nature can be a challenge.

At the same time, communities are facing new environmental pressures. Climate change is bringing heavier rainfall, higher summer temperatures, and increasing strain on local ecosystems. Natural landscapes that once absorbed stormwater, cooled neighborhoods, and supported wildlife are steadily being replaced by hard surfaces and fragmented habitats.

Pelham Pathways was created to address these challenges.

A Community-Driven Solution: Pelham Pathways is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to protecting open space and creating accessible outdoor environments where people of all ages and abilities can thrive.

We believe that access to nature is not a luxury—it is essential community infrastructure. Parks, trails, and conservation spaces support physical health, mental well-being, environmental resilience, and social connection.

Our work focuses on transforming underutilized or vulnerable landscapes into protected, accessible places where residents can walk, gather, and reconnect with the natural world.

Through partnerships with civic organizations, municipal leaders, and hundreds of volunteers, Pelham Pathways is building outdoor spaces that serve the entire community.

Projects That Strengthen Community: Pelham Pathways initiatives combine accessibility, conservation, and community engagement.

One of our flagship efforts is the All Persons Trail at Merriam Farm Conservation Area, designed to allow individuals using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers to experience conservation land that was previously difficult to access. By incorporating universal design principles, the trail ensures that people of varying abilities can safely enjoy the outdoors.

In 2026, Pelham Pathways will also lead the development of Harmony Park, a five-acre conservation park created in partnership with Pulpit Rock Lodge #103. This project will transform privately held land into permanently protected public green space featuring accessible walking paths, pollinator habitat restoration, native plantings, and educational signage.

Harmony Park will provide cost-free access to nature while supporting biodiversity, stormwater absorption, and community gathering.

Together, these projects represent a new model for community-based conservation—one that protects land while ensuring it remains accessible to everyone.

Building Resilience for the Future: Pelham Pathways is strengthening community resilience in several ways:

Social Resilience:  Accessible parks and trails provide opportunities for physical activity, social connection, and healthy aging. Outdoor spaces reduce isolation and help build stronger community relationships.

Environmental Resilience:  Native plant restoration, pollinator habitat creation, and land conservation support biodiversity and ecological stability while helping communities adapt to changing climate conditions.

Civic Resilience:  Pelham Pathways engages hundreds of volunteers and partners with civic organizations, creating a culture of stewardship and shared responsibility for local natural resources.

By protecting open space and designing it for inclusive access, Pelham Pathways is ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from the landscapes that make this region special.

A Growing Community Movement: Pelham Pathways operates with no paid staff and relies on the dedication of volunteers and community partners. More than 250 volunteers already support our projects through planning, stewardship, education, and events.

Our partnerships include local nonprofits, conservation organizations, municipal boards, civic groups, and community leaders who share a commitment to protecting Pelham’s natural character.

Together, we are creating a model for how communities can protect open space while expanding access to outdoor recreation.

Join Us: Pelham Pathways welcomes partners, volunteers, and supporters who share our vision for a community where nature remains accessible to everyone.

By investing in accessible green space today, we are protecting the character, health, and environmental future of Pelham for generations to come.
