White Mountain Community Health Center fosters community-wide health through quality and compassionate services. These include primary care for all genders and ages, dental care, behavioral health, substance use disorder treatment, reproductive health, dietician services, and care coordination. We make sure that everyone in Mount Washington Valley can access these services through a generous sliding fee scale and other programs that remove barriers to care.
Adequate dental care has long been out of reach for many people in Mount Washington Valley. That’s beginning to change as Medicaid now covers many services for people who qualify. We offer dental cleanings and X-rays for adult primary care patients at a reduced cost on our sliding fee scale, and we also take dental insurance and an unlimited number of patients with Medicaid.
However, many patients who qualify for our sliding fee scale make too much to qualify for Medicaid, putting dental care we can’t provide directly out of reach, including extractions, root canals, and dentures. Older patients use Medicare, which doesn’t cover dental care. Medicaid also doesn’t cover dentures, so even when covered patients are able to have deteriorating teeth removed, they can’t replace them.
This means that while we can help patients with cleanings and minor dental work at a rate they can afford, we see many suffer with urgent, serious dental needs without recourse. In 2025, our primary care providers had 35 visits for dental abscesses, which are often caused by delayed tooth extractions. These patients often get repeat courses of antibiotics for infections that would be solved with an extraction, or, in some cases, pull their own teeth at home. Beyond the pain and health risk of decaying teeth, bad dental health makes it harder to get a good job and can hold people back in other ways.
We have a dental fund to help patients pay for extractions at a local dentist when they qualify for our sliding fee scale but not Medicaid – unfortunately, our dental fund is depleted. With our financial situation tightening, we aren’t able to replenish it with our own funds.
Our goal of $3000 would allow us to help 10 patients get urgently needed extractions. Contributions of any amount will get us there!
A larger donation would allow more patients to achieve more complete dental health, and allow us to have money left over to help new patients over the next few years. We estimate that our current patients’ unmet dental needs total about $60,000. This represents about 30 patients, most of whom need full or partial dentures to replace multiple extractions. If you are interested in contributing towards this larger need, please reach out to Director of Development, Siena Kaplan-Thompson at (603) 447-8900 x312 or skaplan@whitemountainhealth.org.
