The Andover Historical Society was established in 1982 to preserve the history of Andover, New Hampshire, through the acquisition and conservation of property, artifacts and stories; and to foster an awareness of and appreciation for that history within the community. Andover’s rich and distinctive history includes the renowned Black entertainer, ventriloquist, and magician Richard Potter. The Society is located on the grounds of Potter’s former home, where he and his wife, Sally, are buried, and the historic village of Potter Place bears his name. Our history also highlights Mary Chase, President of the New Hampshire Women’s Suffrage Association, who lived in Andover while teaching at Proctor Academy. In 2019, a commemorative marker was dedicated on the town green in her honor as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. This site is also included on the National Votes for Women Trail.

Following the celebration of our 40th anniversary in 2022—marked by the dedication of a new monument honoring Richard Potter and the inclusion of Potter Place on the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire—the Andover Historical Society has entered an exciting new chapter. Our vision for the next 40 years is to build upon the work of those who came before us and ensure the Society remains a valued resource for future generations.

The Society’s museum buildings are open to visitors during the summer on weekends from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Hours are Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM and Sundays from 12:30 to 3 PM.

Memberships and contributions are gratefully received. The Andover Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For further information, please contact the Andover Historical Society at PO Box 167, Andover NH 03216 or treasurer@AndoverHistory.org.
