Meet Green Mountain Conservation Group
Founded in 1997, Green Mountain Conservation Group is both a land trust and a leader in environmental advocacy and education in the Ossipee Watershed. Our five tracts of conservation land and 14 conservation easements cover over 2,600 acres in East Central New Hampshire and Western Maine. GMCG is a platform for citizens across the Ossipee region to learn about and mediate environmental issues of all kinds, particularly the long-term protection of the fragile Ossipee Aquifer, NH's largest stratified drift aquifer. We are the only organization conducting comprehensive year-round water testing of the Ossipee Lake System and the Ossipee River. For the past 23 years, GMCG has collaborated with Maine’s Saco River Corridor Commission on a volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program providing base-line water quality data for the two-state Ossipee/Saco watershed and 26 towns. We invite you to join us!
Through its Best Management Practices (BMP) program GMCG promotes innovative and effective Storm Water Control Measures to manage erosion and pollution containment. A long-term goal is to inspire every lakeside and riverside landowner to learn about and adopt these often simple and affordable measures to improve and protect water quality.
GMCG’s highly regarded youth environmental education programs have been offered in over a dozen elementary, middle and high schools in NH and western Maine. These include the GET WET! groundwater testing curriculum; Volunteer Biological Assessment Program (macroinvertebrate sampling and identification); Trout in the Classroom; and the Less Plastics Initiative.
Through its Aquifer Protection Committee, GMCG works to advance public awareness regarding threats to the aquifer and encourages municipalities to promote and raise awareness for effective groundwater protection standards.
To learn more visit www.gmcg.org or call 603-589-1859. Visitors are welcome year-round to the Great Blue Heron walking trail at the Patricia & Charles H. Watts II Conservation Center on the Ossipee River in Effingham.

Founded in 1997, Green Mountain Conservation Group is both a land trust and a leader in environmental advocacy and education in the Ossipee Watershed. Our three tracts of conservation land and 13 conservation easements cover close to 2,500 acres in East Central New Hampshire and Western Maine. For the past 18 years, GMCG has collaborated with Maine’s Saco River Corridor Commission on a volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program providing base-line water quality data for the two-state Ossipee/Saco watershed and 26 towns. We invite you to join us!
Through its Best Management Practices (BMP) program GMCG collaborates with environmental engineers and NH DES to design innovative and effective models of erosion control and pollution containment. A long-term goal is to inspire every lakeside and riverside landowner to learn about and adopt these often simple and affordable measures to improve and protect water quality.
GMCG’s highly regarded youth environmental education programs are offered in over a dozen elementary, middle and high schools in NH and western Maine. These include the GET WET! groundwater testing curriculum; Volunteer Biological Assessment Program (macroinvertebrate sampling and identification); Trout in the Classroom; and the Less Plastics Initiative.
As the convener of the Ossipee Aquifer Advisory Committee, GMCG works to advance public awareness regarding threats to the aquifer and encourages municipalities to promote and enforce effective groundwater protection standards.
