Protecting clean water across all seven communities of the Ossipee Watershed

At GMCG, our mission is to protect the lakes, rivers and groundwater of the greater Ossipee Watershed, its aquifer, land, and associated natural resources to ensure prosperous communities and a healthy ecosystem for all. From water-quality monitoring and watershed science to protecting critical lands that recharge groundwater and sustain wildlife habitat, our work is rooted in the understanding that healthy ecosystems and clean water are inseparable. Your support during NH Gives helps ensure these extraordinary waters continue to nourish communities, ecosystems, and future generations.

Since 1997, Green Mountain Conservation Group has grown its land protection efforts (stewarding 2,600 acres) and has a proven track record in leading environmental advocacy and education programs in the Ossipee Watershed.  GMCG encourages citizens across the Ossipee region to learn about and mediate environmental issues of all kinds, particularly the long-term protection of the fragile Ossipee Aquifer, NH's largest stratified drift aquifer.  We are the only organization conducting comprehensive year-round water testing of the Ossipee Lake System and the Ossipee River; collaborating with Maine’s Saco River Corridor Commission on a volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program providing base-line water quality data for the two-state Ossipee/Saco watershed and 26 towns.

Through its Best Management Practices (BMP) program GMCG promotes innovative and effective Storm Water Control Measures to manage erosion and pollution containment.  A long-term goal is to inspire every lakeside and riverside landowner to learn about and adopt these often simple and affordable measures to improve and protect water quality.

GMCG’s highly regarded youth environmental education programs have been offered in over a dozen elementary, middle and high schools in NH and western Maine. These include the GET WET! groundwater testing curriculum; Volunteer Biological Assessment Program (macroinvertebrate sampling and identification); Trout in the Classroom; and the Less Plastics Initiative.

Thank you for standing with GMCG and helping protect the waters that connect us all.
