Our Story
Somewhere in our community there is an older adult who can’t afford food.
Seniors who have recently been discharged from the hospital, are struggling to meet new dietary recommendations to get back on their feet. Others with chronic illnesses who are skipping meals entirely, and some simply having no regular access to shopping. They are hungry. They are your neighbors. They want to stay in their homes and they need your help.
Barbara is 85 years old, lives alone, and has diabetes. She eagerly looks forward to hearing her Meals on Wheels driver pull up to her home and knock on her door.
“My meals from HCS are made especially for my diabetes,” Barbara says. “It would be so hard for me to shop for and afford the right ingredients without this program. The wonderful meals mean a lot to me—and so do all the people who deliver and prepare them. God bless them.”
Every day, HCS Meals on Wheels drivers deliver to 350 people in Cheshire County. This program is much more than a meal to these homebound older adults and individuals with disabilities. For many, the friendly, smiling Meals on Wheels driver provides a welcome bit of conversation to brighten the day. And with this comes peace of mind and a sense of safety in having a daily “check-in.” Meals on Wheels deliveries can help folks stay independent at home by providing good nutrition that is brought to their home. For those with special needs, special diets are also available.
$10 provides a nutritious meal for a senior who depends on the kindness of strangers for the basics.
$50 provides meals for a senior for a week.
$100 provides meals for two weeks.
$250 provides meals for a month.
