Imagine being forced to flee your home. You must leave your family, belongings, and home country behind to live in a country where you don’t know the language, culture, and people.
This is the case for many of our clients.
Since 2013, Overcomers has been serving New Americans - former refugees who fled their home countries due to war, persecution, violence, and genocide, and resettled here in New Hampshire.
At Overcomers Refugee Services, we empower refugees and immigrants resettled in NH as they rebuild their lives in new communities. We don't just give them fish, we teach them how to fish. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to offer various services, including English language tutoring and citizenship preparation through our volunteer program, job placement, peace-building support, social services, applications for green cards and employment authorization, and more.
Who Our Clients Are
Ninety-nine percent of ORS clients are refugees who arrived in the United States through the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program. The remaining clients are asylum seekers with pending applications.
These are people who fled war, violence, or natural disaster, many living outside their home countries for 15 to 20 years. Those with Refugee status were offered the opportunity by the U.S. government to build a new life here. Before arriving, each person completed an approximately two-year vetting process administered by the U.S. Department of State, including medical screenings, criminal background checks, in-person interviews, and other rigorous screenings.
Under U.S. law, refugees are granted a clear path to permanent residency and citizenship: a green card after one year in the United States, and eligibility to apply for citizenship after five years. Today, that commitment and pathway is under serious and unprecedented threat.
In the past year, there have been new challenges for our clients including processing delays for green cards and Employment Authorization Documents and more stringent citizenship requirements. Also, many people are in danger of losing SNAP and Medicaid benefits due to measures created in the Big Beautiful Bill.
As we continue to navigate the challenges that have risen with changes in leadership and policy, we remain optimistic, and our focus remains on what we do best—helping New Americans thrive. By working hand in hand with our supporters, we are confident that we can navigate any shifts and while continuing to meet the growing demand for our services.
To ensure we can continue this momentum, we invite you to join us in this opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of refugees. Please donate any amount that is comfortable for your budget.
By donating to Overcomers Refugee Services through NHGives, you are investing in the resilience and potential of individuals who have faced unimaginable hardship and are striving to rebuild their lives.
We appreciate your consideration and support. Together, we can be the driving force behind positive change and create a world where refugees can not only survive but also thrive.
