All whales deserve to live in a healthy ocean. All students deserve the chance to learn about science. We all deserve to enjoy clean beaches and waterways. These things are all possible with your support.

Donate now, and your gift will be DOUBLED!  Any gift, of any size, makes a difference.

Your support helps:

  • Expand beach cleanups and marine debris prevention—because the best trash is the trash that never reaches the water.
  • Grow education programs at the Blue Ocean Discovery Center and out in the community, reaching more families and schools.
  • Make programs more accessible so more people can participate and feel they belong in conservation.
  • Expand whale research and long-term monitoring in the Gulf of Maine, including offseason surveys.
  • Share our science widely—through reports, community talks, and presentations with regional and international partners.
  • Increase collaborations so we can get more done, learn faster, and stretch every donated dollar further.

About Our Work

Our mission is to protect marine life in the Gulf of Maine through research, education, and inspiring action. We are thrilled to celebrate our 25th anniversary this year. While we have made a real difference over the past 25 years, we want the next year - and the next 25 years to be even stronger.

The need for our work has grown. The Gulf of Maine is one of the fastest-warming bodies of water on the planet. That means marine life is changing where it goes, when it arrives, what it eats, and how it survives. When big decisions are on the table—offshore development, changing shipping patterns, emerging uses of the ocean— we need long-term science to understand real trends, not just snapshots.

While understanding the science is the foundation, hands-on learning is equally important.

Experiential learning matters more than ever. Many schools have fewer resources for hands-on science, and many young people are hungry for real-world work that feels meaningful. Blue Ocean Society fills that gap by getting people outside, into the field, and connected to the Gulf of Maine.

Last year, we reached more than 25,000 people through hands-on education programs—at our Blue Ocean Discovery Center, on the water, in classrooms, at events, and out in the community. We also removed more than 7,000 pounds of litter from local beaches and documented the behavior of hundreds of whales out in the Gulf of Maine.
