At Pope Memorial Humane Society-Cocheco Valley (PMHS-CV) we provide sanctuary for over 1,000 abused, neglected, or unwanted animals each year. As an open shelter, we don't place limits or time restrictions on our animals. Every pet that enters our care has as much time as they need to find a loving forever home. We ensure that each of our animals stays healthy and happy while in the shelter, and take the time to get to know them, so we can match them with the right adopter and set them up for success! PMHS-CV relies solely on the support of our community to care for our furry friends! By contributing to our NH Gives campaign, you'll truly be making a concrete impact on the lives of animals in need! We provide many services and programming for the community:

Low-cost Spay, Neuter, Rabies and Microchip Clinics are provided throughout the year for the community. Many of the animals that are brought to these clinics would not be getting spayed or neutered, or their shots because their owners cannot afford the cost of taking them to a veterinarian.

Behavioral Training Program is a key service we provide to keep dogs with their current owners. Behavior is noted as the primary reason for surrender in approximately 50% of cases. We have hired full-time Training & Behavior Manager and a part-time behavioral trainer to work with our shelter dogs to help train them and increase their opportunities for adoption.

Pet Food Assistance Program provides food assistance to families experiencing crisis due to job loss or medical issues to help ease the burden of feeding their pet. The goal of the service is to keep the pet with the family and prevent the surrender of a pet due to financial hardship.

The Mother Spay Program offers free spay surgery to mother dogs and cats after their litters are weaned, helping families keep mom while we find loving homes for her babies. Your donation makes this lifesaving, cycle-breaking program possible.

Safe Pets Program is available for people and pets in domestic violence situations or a medical crisis. In these instances, PMHS—CV cares for the individual or family’s animal(s) and reunites the family and animal(s) when the crisis has passed.

Chris’ Pets for Vets Program helps unite veterans with companion animals. Chris’ Pets for Vets will pay a portion of the adoption fee for an animal as long as the potential adopter is eligible through PMHS—CV’s application process.

For all the animals that enter our facility we provide not only, basic care, food, water and shelter, but also medical care. This includes everything from vaccines for rabies, distemper, URI and Kennel cough to spay and neuter procedures, and heartworm and flea and tick preventative treatments. Our focus is the health and well-being of the animals that come through our doors. The annual cost for medical treatment is approximately $100,000. Your support for NH Gives will help us give the animals that come to us a second chance and the opportunity to find loving forever homes.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 in just ONE DAY with NH Gives! These funds will be used to help save the lives of countless animals. No contribution is too small, and every penny goes directly to the animals!
